In case you didn’t notice (I know you haven’t but anyway) I have been MIA for I think, almost a month now. Sadly, I didn’t quite live it up this month, I still have posts pending from my travels to Munnar and Kodaikannal but I think I went through an important life lesson in my absence.
Part A: Where was I?
Quite recently I was hired by a company, here in Dubai and right from the get-go I just didn’t like it. There was something really off about it and something just didn’t feel right. For a while I did believe that this is just my arrogance and ego talking because people go through much worse in terms of work culture and bosses; doing things that are not in their job description and get paid way lesser and here I am the ungrateful employee who wants to just let it all go because they’re not ‘feeling it’.
But because I am quite stubborn and I rely on my gut a lot, I went ahead and called it quits anyway only to find out that the company was not ready to negotiate on the notice period (which is pure crap to follow through even if it was mentioned in my contract cause I served only 8 working days). But anyway right after, I was threatened with a ban and they even tried duping me to pay back the company for all the days I worked; so we can all conclude that I dodged a shit show.
The life lesson here is if it just doesn’t feel right – get out. Make sure you’re not being a brat, do your homework, ask people around, avoid any massive expenses and plan your exit. If you’re convinced that this is not going to work just get out. This works for bad relationships, travels even and your career as well.
Part B: Who cares?
All this while that I have been gone, I also noticed that my social accounts haven’t massively dropped and that came as a surprise to me. A lot of people will tell you that the minute you start a blog, treat it like a business. Fair enough, cause there are people that rely on their blog to pay bills. But no one really cares if you take a break and go offline for sometime. If they really like you and what you do, they’ll stay.
Just like a job, if they really think that you’re an asset, you’re different and you’re going to add something more then they’ll make sure that you stay.
I’m putting this out more for myself than for anyone else to be honest but if you’re probably stuck in a situation similar to mine then just follow your gut. Also, no one cares.
