Kodaikanal is not one of the most scenic places I’ve visited but it’s a good place for a short staycay. I stayed at Kodaikanal for about three nights before I left for Madurai and I realised that the only scenic place in all of Kodaikanal was the view from Wunderhaus.
Wunderhaus Artists Getaway And Homestay is situated at the highest altitude of Kodaikanal. That being said, it gets a little difficult to reach the place. Just a note here, if you’re coming from observatory road, there’s a road on the left just after Kodai Peak Hotel. It might not look like a road but trust me, it is. Drive right in until you see a wooden gate with the word ‘DACHAS’ written on it. Enter the gate and go all the way up until you find a house with different flags.
My homestay in #Kodai is probably the only thing I'd go back to 🤣🤣. No tree, no shade 🤷🏽♀️but here's a glimpse. Trippy huh?🍭 • • • • • #travel #instatravel #traveltheworld #travelbug #exploretheworld #iamtraveler #exploringtheglobe #travelawesome #doyoutravel #incredibleindia #travellife #globetrotter #neverstopexploring #iphoneography #travelblogger #kodai #india #indiatravelgram #travelasia #mytinyatlas #bookingyeah #femaletravelblogger #photography #holiday #letsgoeverywhere #homestay #_woi
This is the best part about Wunderhaus. Kedar, the host of the homestay designed the entire place on his own and it is absolutely trippy. Please make sure you go through the gallery just to see how cosy and artsy this place is. There were times when we would not want to step out because the place is super cosy.
Kedar has a projector and a great stash of movies, so the very first night we propped the projector up and watched a movie with a slice of pizza.
Kedar is an amazing host. He makes the most healthiest breakfast and damn good coffee. He helped us a lot when it came to budgeted sightseeing. He also gets really annoyed with drivers who fail to take the first left. But all in all, damn sweet guy.
His driver Murugan is the most helpful guy in all of Kodai. He took us around to Vatakannal and also trekked with us to the Dolphin’s Nose. I’ll put a detailed itinerary for Kodai in my next post but these guys will make sure that you’ve spent your time economically.
Since the homestay is situated at the highest altitude, the temperature drops to 15-10 in the night. The rooms have thick, warm blankets to keep you cosy, but I would suggest to carry ample socks or sweaters to keep you warm.
The Observatory, Fairy Falls and the pine tree rainforest are all around. You can walk to most of these places but like I said earlier, Kodai is not one of the most scenic places. That being said Murugan is always there to drive you around. Dominoes Pizza delivers but you’d rather pack something for dinner and bring it home or just cook Maggi for the night. Kedar’s got supplies at home so you can use the kitchen to cook dinner.
Three nights at Wunderhaus with free breakfast on all three days came up to approx. INR 11,500 with taxes. That’s approx. AED 659.44/ USD 179.54.
Will I go back to Kodaikanal? No. Will I go back just to stay for about two nights at Wunderhaus? Yes, absolutely. If you’re a couple or a small group or just a backpacker that wants to make a pitstop or wants to spend a night someplace cosy, then you’ve got to pick Wunderhaus. Right from the hospitality to the location – it’s everything you want from a homestay. Kedar and Murugan are super helpful. They made us feel comfortable, took care of us and will give you insider tips on the best places to eat and sightsee around Kodai.
