Kodaikanal is no doubt a great place for a short staycay and by short I mean two nights max. I have heard probably the same things you’ve heard about Kodaikanal BUT they forgot to add in these useful tips:
1. Kodaikanal is not for female solo travellers
In fact, it’s only good for couples. Sadly, male solo travellers can walk around and avoid all the catcalling and letching. I wouldn’t say it’s a 100% unsafe but it’s impossible to explore the place without being stalked. Sad but true.
2. You can finish it in a day
It’s not the most scenic place. Even if you walk through the rainforest in Vatakannal and trek down Dolphin’s Nose – you’ll finish it in half a day and mind you, these are the only two places that are worth visiting.
3. Homestays vs. Hotels
For solo travellers or couples that want a quiet place away without breaking the bank, I would always, always recommend a homestay. I did a review on Wunderhaus Artists Getaway and Homestay in Kodai; please check this place out if you want to getaway for a bit. Hotels no doubt, have scenic spots as well but they’re quite expensive. I’d say if you wanna pamper yourself then pick a hotel.
4. The extra toppings are not that great
I’m not quite sure how to put this across but man the extra toppings are so not worth it. We got the freshest toppings for our pizza and I kid you not – no effect. Everything is high definition for about 20 minutes and that’s it.
5. The tour packages are over priced
A lot of couples come to Kodaikanal for their honeymoon and that’s why most tour packages are over priced. I’ll be putting out a post of things to do in Kodaikanal with prices so that you can just find a driver and pick a couple of things to do.
Again, not every part of Kodaikanal is scenic and you absolutely cannot compare it to Munnar. It’s a great place for a short staycay and nothing more than that. Hope you plan your trip to Kodai based on these insights and watch out for the next post on things to do.
